ALL YOUR PERFECTS hooked me from the very first page, I didn’t even realize I was getting sore since I was seated on the same spot for hours binge reading.
About the read:
For starters, Colleen Hoover takes the reader in an emotional roller coaster with this story.
It alternates between two timelines: Quinn and Graham’s meeting and initial romance (sexytimes alert!) and seven years later, when their marriage and relationship is on the rocks after years of struggling with Quinn’s inability to get pregnant. She’s deeply distressed by her infertility that she’s torpedoing her marriage, and Graham is at his wit’s end. Both make mistakes – some huge, serious ones which get to a verge of separation.
I’ve never read a book with the content like this one. It was a heartbreaking look inside of a marriage which has been damaged by something that couldn’t be controlled. The way Quinn and Graham were handling this, was both devastating and powerful at the same time. It’s really extraordinary how the author can write about difficult life moments in such a beautiful way. Love is remarkable! Sometimes it can help you overcome even the hardest events in your life, but sometimes it’s not enough.
What I learnt:
It’s a heavier story, more drama than fun especially the recent years in their marriage. It’s really subtle in its message, but if you don’t mind a bit more heavy-handed approach in literature, it offers a great lesson in hanging on to what’s important in life and not letting the problems, however large, ruin what’s good in your life. There are some good secondary characters, especially Quinn’s sister Ava, and the earlier timeline is a very heartwarming romance. Really, in the end, it’s all heartwarming (I don’t consider this a spoiler because, Colleen Hoover romance novel), but this romance ship has a lot of stormy seas to sail through.
If you only shine light on your flaws, all your perfects will dim.”
‘Our marriage hasn’t been perfect. No marriage is perfect. There were times when she gave up on us. There were even more times when I gave up on us. The secret to our longevity is that we never gave up at the same time.”
“When you meet someone who is good for you, they won’t fill you with insecurities by focusing on your flaws. They’ll fill you with inspiration, because they’ll focus on all the best parts of you.”
“No matter how much you love someone—the capacity of that love is meaningless if it outweighs your capacity to forgive.”
Why I loved it and kept reading:
I don’t know how Colleen Hoover manages to create such authentic, heartfelt stories time and time again, leaving us utterly breathless and incoherent in their aftermath, but I do know that this book is one of my absolute favourites and I could actually start believing in love.
Why I recommend it:
All Your Perfects brings all the feels. The love story between Quinn and Graham is so real, raw and unique.
